How Skybear Got Its Name |

For millennia in northern climes the sibling constellations of Ursas major and minor have directed mariners and land-sojourners alike. Often backlit by the shimmering aurora these faithful bears have pointed out the way. With their counter-clockwise daily spin around polaris, the northern star, they offer reassurance back to the star struck traveler seeking refuge. At Skybear we have hitched our wagon there also. It is the sight you may see when you step from your door. Coincidentally perhaps, nestled on the northern ridge beyond you is 'skybear lake'. This surprises even the cartographer in its remarkable rendering. The bear that has been imprinted from the sky is defined among the leaf litter of 10,000 autumns since the retreat of the great ice. As the mighty glaciers withdrew, they sketched their careful drawings upon the landscape. On a star filled night 'skybear lake' reflects back upon its makers. And from our vantage at Skybear Lodge we do the same. So catch a falling star if you visit us, save it or pass it on. - Jeffrey Riordan Hinich |
